Le lierre d’ornement – Hedera helix ‘Perkeo’
In a nutshell
Ivy, Hedera helix 'Perkeo', an original
First, the foliage
The vast majority of ivy plants have foliage cut into 3, 5 or 7 lobes. But Hedera helix 'Perkeo' is an exception, with its almost round leaves. This is a rare feature in ivy. But that's not all. Most ivy leaves are flat. Not so with 'Perkeo', whose leaves are curved, embossed or bumpy. Some see them as ears. But rest assured, they're not listening! The fact remains that 'Perkeo' is not lacking in charm, with its tender green foliage in spring, which takes on beautiful orange hues in winter. It's even prettier when the red veins that criss-cross it stand out.
But also behavior
And his frugality
Ivy plants usually thrive in undergrowth, where the soil is rich in humus from decomposing tree branches and leaves. Perkeo' doesn't dislike this kind of situation. But it will then behave like ordinary ivy with lobed leaves, losing its originality. On the other hand, it's in poor, even dry soil that it will be at its best, with its original leaves and habit.
Ivy, Hedera helix 'Perkeo', will prove to you that there is great diversity among ivies and that you can create original and permanent decorations by choosing well from the very rich range of different ports, different foliage, different colors, different behaviors...
Another ivy with almost the same characteristics as 'Perkeo': Hedera helix 'Ralf'. Perkeo' ivy is a mutation of 'Ralf'.
