Description
Ornamental ivy - Hedera helix ‘Perkeo’
In a nutshell
Ornamental ivy, Hedera helix ‘Perkeo’, This plant is an interesting curiosity for ground cover, spreading its stems low to the ground, with cut leaves resembling ears.
Light green leaves, cut with red stems and veins, bushy habit. Beautiful winter colours.
Its characteristic foliage persists in dry, poor soil; in more favourable conditions, the vigorous shoots have 3-lobed leaves.
Ivy, Hedera helix 'Perkeo', an original
First of all, the foliage
The vast majority of ivy plants have foliage divided into 3, 5 or 7 lobes. But Hedera helix ‘Perkeo’ is an exception, with its almost round leaves. This is a rare feature in ivy. But that's not all. Most ivy leaves are flat. But not with ‘Perkeo’, whose leaves are curved, embossed or bumpy. Some people see them as ears. But rest assured, they're not listening! The fact remains that ‘Perkeo’ is not lacking in charm, with its tender green foliage in spring, which takes on lovely orange hues in winter. It's even prettier when the red veins that criss-cross it stand out.
But also behaviour
And his frugality
Ivy plants generally thrive in undergrowth, where the soil is rich in humus from decomposing tree branches and leaves. Perkeo doesn't dislike this kind of situation. But it will then behave like ordinary ivy with lobed leaves, losing its originality. Conversely, it is in poor, even dry soil that it will be at its best, with its original leaves and habit.
Ivy, Hedera helix ‘Perkeo’ is proof that ivy is extremely diverse and that it is possible to create original, permanent decorations by choosing from a wide range of different types of habit, foliage, colour and behaviour...
Another ivy with almost the same characteristics as ‘Perkeo’ : Hedera helix ‘Ralf’. Perkeo‘ ivy is a mutation of ’Ralf‘.
