Algerian ivy - Hedera algeriensis ‘Gloire de Marengo’

In a nutshell

Algerian ivy, Hedera algeriensis ‘Bowles ox Heart’, is a broad-leaved ivy with slightly undulating margins.

The leaf blade generally has 3 to 5 lobes and is a dull medium green. It can sometimes be unlobed. This variety has beautiful winter colours.

It is a vigorous, climbing or ground-covering variety.

History

This cultivar is named after EA Bowles, an English horticulturist, who in his book «My Garden in Autumn and Winter» mentions an ivy called ‘Bullock's Heart Ivy’ forming a large mass with huge leaves. A surviving specimen was found in his garden in Enfield, Great Britain, in the 1980s.

Recent analyses indicate that it could be a hybrid between Hedera algeriensis and Hedera hibernica.
