Description

Algerian ivy - Hedera algeriensis ‘Gloire de Marengo’

In a nutshell

Algerian ivy, Hedera algeriensis ‘Gloire de Marengo’, is a beautiful variegated ivy with large, shiny leaves in shades of green, with cream, grey, silver or light yellow spots.

The leaf blade is generally unlobed or sometimes composed of 3 lobes. The petiole is dark red.

This is a vigorous, fast-growing variety that is particularly suitable as a climber. But it is also ideal as a houseplant.

History

This cultivar has been known for a long time. It could correspond to the description made by Paul in 1867, under the name of Hedera algeriensis var. variegata. It is perhaps also him that one finds in a publication of Vilmorin dated 1883 under the name of Hedera canariensis variegata. Finally, it would also correspond to Hibberd's 1890 description of ‘Lacteola’. It was not until 1924 that it was given its present name of ‘Gloire de Marengo’ in the Hillier & Sons catalogue, probably in reference to the ‘Marengo’ park in Algiers.
