Description
Algerian ivy - Hedera algeriensis 'Chloé
In a nutshell
Hedera algeriensis 'Chloé' was found near a village in Seine et Marne.
It takes on beautiful hues in winter, with blood-red leaves.
Vigorous, it produces annual shoots of over a metre.
To be planted in a sheltered spot, it didn't survive outside in the Morvan at a temperature of -12°C, but in an unheated greenhouse, no problem.
Perhaps it was originally bred from Algeriensis 'Montgomery'?
The question of circumstance
Is Algerian ivy 'Chloé' invasive?
Chloé' ivy, Hedera algeriensis 'Chloé', grows generously. Is this a defect or a quality? It's undoubtedly a quality for those with space who want to cover a floor or wall fairly quickly, for example. In a small space, this ivy will find itself a little cramped.
There are many varieties of ivy, some of which are not at all invasive. To make your choice in this category, take a look at slow-growing orcompact ivies.
Above all, ivy stands up well to pruning. You can even prune it severely. It will re-grow its foliage with no problem. You can also restrict it to a specific area, or give it a particular shape, rather like a topiary.
